Support to National AIDS Programme
Twenty-seven (27) of the UNV specialists are attached to this programme implemented by the Ministry of Health with AIDS Advisors in 16 districts, while the others are based at the project management office, the AIDS/STD Unit (ASU) in Gaborone. The UNVs are providing technical advice and direction at the district level in piloting multi-sectoral response to curb the spread of HIV and AIDS and to mitigate its impact through policy development, institutional strengthening and effective service delivery. This is being stressed specifically through capacity building in community home - based care, training of counsellors, advisory role to the different sectors in the district (e.g. education, agriculture, the defense force, and labour), as well as programmatic strengthening in view of widely varied experience and technical support to NGOs and the private sector. Support to National Gender Programme
The two (2) UNV Specialists in this programme were closely integrated with their national counterparts in promoting the enhancement of the status of Batswana women in coordination with the Women's Affairs Department (WAD) under the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs. The successor programme has recruited International United Nations Volunteers and will recruit four more National United Nations Volunteers soon. The role of the UNVs in the programme is geared towards the improvement and full integration of women into the socio-economic and national development process. Support to NetAid/UN Information Technology Service (UNITeS) and WorLD Links for Development Programme One (1) UNV and an international student - interm are attached to this programme at the Teachers' Training and Development Department of the Ministry of Education. The support provides technical assistance in the development of sustainable solutions for mobilizing equipment, training, educational resources and school-to-school partnerships to the end of bringing students in developing countries online and into the global community. They work closely with national counterparts towards the improvement and expansion of educational opportunities by empowering and enriching the learning experience of teachers and students on information and communications technologies (ICT). Fully-funded UNVs at the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and Enterprise Botswana
Through the assistance of the Government of Japan, two (2) fully-funded Japanese UNVs are attached to the YWCA and Enterprise Botswana. The UNV Specialist attached to Enterprise Botswana provides advisory support to business management-related requirements of the organization while the one attached to YWCA assist the horticulture needs of YWCA's regional office in Kweneng East. Care and Maintenance of Refugees in Botswana (UNHCR) Three (3) UNVs, a Field Protection Officer, Refugee Camp Manager and Community Service Officer are attached to UNHCR to assist in providing protection to refugees in Botswana in accordance with the provisions of the 1951 UN Convention of Refugees and the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa. They provide support in assisting the refugees towards the full realization of all their socio-economic rights as granted to them by relevant international instruments and local legislations. Also, the UNVs assist in facilitating a better understanding between the refugees and their host community in order to facilitate local integration in an enabling environment. Implementation of the National Population Policy (UNFPA) Through the assistance of the Government of Belgium, one (1) fully-funded Belgian UNV is attached at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) through UNFPA, to assist in the management, administration and execution of activities related to the National Population Policy. This includes the conduct of awareness workshops on the national policy and its inter-relationships between population and development. The UNV Specialist likewise assists in the monitoring of the resources and budget of the National Implementation Plan of Action (NIPA) of the National Population Policy. Support to National Volunteer Capacity: International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001 In support to the celebration of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001, a National UNV is due for recruitment for the rest of the year to provide support in the strengthening of civil societies through volunteerism. The means to this end will be consultation, research, information dissemination, resource mobilization and acting as focal point for the UN office for all volunteer-related issues.
