The work of the UN system in Botswana, especially that of the United Nations Development Programme, has been greatly facilitated by good governance, democracy and prudent macro economic management that resonate as hallmarks of this nation.

In Botswana, UNDP's goal is to continue to provide quality policy advisory services, share best practices and support government efforts to build capacity to address development challenges related to poverty, HIV/AIDS and environment management for the current programming cycle of 2003 to 2007. Issues of governance and gender arel also being factored into various programmes and projects.

Currently, UNDP Botswana supports programmes in the following areas:

The partnership also seeks to fulfill the objectives of Botswana's Vision 2016 as follows:

  • Halving poverty from 47% (1994) to 23% by 2007
  • Maintaining 8% per annum GDP growth until 2016
  • Increasing per capita income from $3300 in 1997 to $8500 in 2016
  • Maintaining Budgetary allocation of 35% to social sector while improving targeting for "pro-poor" action
  • Containing and reversing the spread of HIV and AIDS with a view to achieving an AIDS-free generation in 2016
  • Mainstreaming Gender into the development process and
  • Promoting a Just, Participatory and Compassionate Society.

Beyond country teams, the organization also engages in global and regional advocacy and analysis to increase knowledge, share best practices, build partnerships, mobilize resources, and promote enabling frameworks including international targets for reducing poverty. In addition, UNDP supports technical cooperation among developing Countries.
