Governance: Public Sector Reform

The First Country Cooperation Framework for Botswana (1997-2002) has identified Governance as one of the areas for UNDP assistance. Preliminary discussions are underway on the elements and scope of a comprehensive Governance and Public Sector Reform Programme to be developed within this period of cooperation.

There have been some standalone initiatives and projects on Governance. Some of these included the Assistance to the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly and Support to the Vision Council on the design of a monitoring and evaluation system for Vision 2016 for Botswana. Botswana has established a long-term vision covering a period of 15 years starting in 1997. The Vision sets some goals for the nation for the year 2016, identifies major challenges in achieving them and proposes a set of strategies to achieve them.

Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly Project

One example of the UNDP intervention is the support to the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly project. The objective of the project was to facilitate dissemination of and access to information emanating from the National Assembly about political processes, as well as to enhance general knowledge about the office. The output was an Intranet and a Human Resources Management System for Members of Parliament and the House of Chiefs.

Support to Vision 2016

UNDP is also assisting the Botswana Vision Council to set up a suitable monitoring and evaluation system to track and monitor the implementation of Vision 2016. Vision 2016 is meant to help the nation to achieve specific broad results within the next fifteen years and beyond.
