The United Nations, established on October 24, 1945, by fifty-one countries, is today comprised of 189 member states. As an international alliance for the promotion of universal peace and well-being, its membership seeks "to make the world a better place for all." The UN charter, which binds all members, is based upon the organisation's four basic purposes:
The United Nations, in its myriad capacities, is involved in all spheres of life. From poverty reduction to improving telecommunications and the quality of drinking water, from mobilising funds for developing countries to ensuring the rights of refugees and helping to stabilise financial markets, the UN seeks to be a stakeholder in combating every imaginable obstacle to a better world.
Just as the UN seeks "to harmonise the actions of all nations" on a global level, it also aims to coordinate the operational activities for the development of the United Nations system within each country. The means to this end is the Office of the Resident Coordinator, a designated representative of the UN Secretary-General, who acts as the team leader of each Country Office (CO). The Resident Coordinator reports to the Secretary-General through the UNDP Administrator and - as only one of countless other advocacy, follow-up and information duties - s/he manages and mobilises funds for the RC system within the country. In Botswana, the Office of the Resident Coordinator also provides leadership to the Diplomatic Corps by hosting quarterly Development Partners Meetings. These meetings promote dialogue between various development partners on a number of topics of mutual interest to both Government and the Diplomatic Corps. Please visit The UN in Botswana section of our site to receive a welcome from Botswana's own Resident Coordinator, Mr Macharia Kamau of Kenya.
