Report of the
United Nations
Secretary-General’s
Task Force on
Women,
Girls and
HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa (2004)
If we can stop
the spread of HIV among women and girls in southern Africa, we can
turn the epidemic
around. While
HIV prevalence is high among all sexually active women, girls and
young women are
particularly
affected – the vast majority of young people aged 15-24 living with
HIV/AIDS in southern
Africa are
female. Even more worrying, data shows that many young women are being
infected almost
as soon as
they start having sex.

Women Girls
and HIV/AIDS 2004
The production
of the Botswana UN Secretary General’s Task
Force report
was a collaborative effort between the Government
of Botswana,
the United Nations Theme Group on HIV/AIDS
in Botswana
and the UNAIDS Intercountry Team for East and
Southern
Africa.
The UN Theme
Group on HIV/AIDS is particularly grateful for
the support of
the UN Task Force members, Hon Justice Unity
Dow and Prof
Sheila Tlou.
It is also
grateful for the support of Government departments,
especially
Women’s Affairs Department, National AIDS
Coordinating
Agency and all the NGOs that opened their doors
for the site
visits, namely the Kagisano Women’s Shelter Project,
COCEPWA, and
the YWCA in Gaborone, as well as Women
Against Rape
in Maun.
We are
indebted to the support received from all NGOs, CBOs
and
individuals who provided documents and availed themselves
for interviews
and the two consultative meetings that were held
during the
country visit by the regional SG’s Task force Technical
Working Group.

Human
Development Report 2001
The publication looks at how the advent of new technologies will affect
developing countries and poor people. Technology is just a tool not
just a reward for development. Today people all over the world have
high hopes that new technologies such as information and communication
technology and biotechnology will lead to healthier lives, greater
social freedoms, improved knowledge and more productive livelihoods.

Botswana Initial
National Communication to the UNFCCC
(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change)
Botswana signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change at the "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
in June 1992. Being a signatory to the Convention, Botswana prepared
a national communication, which is an assesment of the country's
present status with the respect to climate change, and also is itself
an important tool on which to base decision concerning climate change
and future national development. It also offers opportunities for
policy refinement and development, and poses the greater challenge
of achieving a lasting balance between improved living conditions
for Batswana and economic, social and environmental needs. Click

Human Development Report 2000
This report is the second in a planned series that started in 1997.
This report picks up the challange on HIV and AIDS precisely because
HIV and AIDS and the related problem of poverty are potentially the
top development challenges facing Botswana. It takes a forward-looking
view of HIV and AIDS and development in the context of Botswana's
long term vision, Vision 2016 and proposes working towards an AIDS
FREE Generation in Botswana by 2016 as long term response.

Attacking
poverty while improving the environment
The relationship between poverty and the environment is commonly thought
of as a "vicious cycle" or a "downward spiral".
Various experiences however, show that neither poverty nor population
growth necessarily lead to environmental degradation.

Women's
political perticipation and good governance: 21st century challanges
In his foreword to "Women Political Participation and Good Governance:
21st Century Challenges," UNDP Administrator Mark Malloch Brown
observes that in spite of progress, one central theme from the 1990s
remains the continued absence of women's voices in governance, due
largely to their inequitable representation and participation in governments,
political parties, non governmental organizations and the private
sector. "Women want and need to be able to participate in the
decisions that affect them, their families, communities and countries,"
he says.

Poverty & HIV/AIDS
in Sub-Saharan Africa
Poverty and HIV/AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa observes that the epidemic
nature of HIV in Africa has its origins in poverty and that until
poverty is reduced there will be little reduction in transmission
of the virus or improvement in capacity to cope with its socio-economic
effects.
